I'd Rather Be A Melody
Josh McIntosh
Babe it just might be that I wasn't born to lead
Yeah, it's been a while since I was accused of diplomacy
But if it's true a man can be what he decides to be
then I'd rather be a melody
You could tell me I was next in line for king
Put me on the mountain, offer all that i could see
You might even tell me you were gonna be my queen
But I'd rather be a melody
Whatever else you're thinking
You can count on me
But I'd rather be a melody...

New Definition
©josh mcintosh
men of ambition seek power and position
but leave their family home wishin'
wife washing dishes in the kitchen
It's an age old tradition seen from a different position
same as it always has been
it's just a new definition
things change...
it ain't always easy to measure
how sometimes pain comes from pleasure,
how always becomes never
yeah, it's a difficult endeavor
but you'll be light as a feather
as long as you can remember
that some friendships are fleeting
like family is forever
things change but family is forever
things change like a melody on the breeze.
but looking down from the ceiling
it always looks the same.
from the ceiling.
But things change....again with feeling
men of ambition seek power and position
by using simple addition
they turn the truth into fiction
we follow without condition
call it our own intuition
same as it always has been it's just a new definition
things change
we go wherever they lead us
we end up just where they need us
they tell us we shouldn't worry
if we get hungry they'll feed us
so we get caught in a bubble
watching the stock market double
but what was once a cool million
I think is now seven hundred
things change
things change like a memory soaked in red wine
we bet it all on a feeling
but i think we'll be just fine
I got a feeling...
things change, but not really
I been around up and down
I been lost and then found
I been asleep on the ground
after a night on the town
But that's only part of the story
and you can choose to ignore me
or you can follow me home
and I'll tell the rest in the morning
things change, but not really. or do they?
things change like a melody on the breeze
but looking down from the ceiling
it always looks the same
things change like a memory soaked in red wine
we bet it all on a feeling
but i think we'll be just fine
i got a feeling...
but things change
not really
ain't nothing new under the sun
ain't no race that ain't already been run
ain't no new melodies that ain't already been sung
except for maybe this one
and we could go on like this for days
with a clever word or turn of phrase
but i think it's about time for me to say goodbye
and i'll be on my way
la da da da....
it's just a new definition

Mystery Train
05:08
|
|||
I admit to taking some liberties with these classic lyrics
Train arrive 16 coaches long
Train arrive 16 coaches long
Well that long black train
Got my baby and gone
Train train rolling round the bend
Train train rolling round the bend
Well it took my baby
Away from me again
Come down to the station
Meet my baby at the gate
Asked the station master
If the train’s running late
He said if you’re a-waiting
On that train 444
I hate to tell you son
That train don’t stop here anymore
mystery train smoking down the line
mystery Train smoking down the line
Well it took my baby
And left poor me behind
train....baby took that train
Went back down the tracks
to find my baby at the railroad station
thinking it might just be
all in my imagination
Heard that whistle blowing
It was the middle of the night
When I got down to the station
That train was pulling out of sight
Mystery train smoking down the track
Mystery train smoking down the track
Well I don’t want no ride
Just bring my baby back
Well I don’t want no ride
Just bring my baby back
Well I don’t want no ride
Just bring my baby back.....

If You Were A River
05:00
|
|||
If I was a fisherman lost on the sea
you'd be a compass
you'd be a light that i could see by
If you were the ocean i'd be the land
cover me up with water
I will fill with the sand in time
If I was a river I'd run deep and wide
and straight and true
If you were a river I would build a canoe
If you were the pen I'd be the word
If I was the paper
you'd be the hand that kept them pages turning
If I was a brush fire you'd be the wind
or maybe a gentle breeze
to fan the flames and keep them burning
If I was a river I'd run deep and wide
and straight and true
If you were a river I would build a canoe
And I'd just go driftin'
or like a tumbleweed tumblin'
put both of my feet in
probably have myself a swim
maybe do a little singin'
might play my mandolin
ride your waterfall violin
until we hit the sea again
If you were a blue sky I'd be a bird
If you were a line of poetry
I'd be the ears that hang on every word
If I was a singer you'd be the song
And you may say I'm a dreamer
but I'm not the only one
If I was a river I'd run deep and wide
and straight and true
If you were a river I would build a canoe
If you were a river I would build a canoe

I Waited
03:55
|
|||
You know just how to make me feel like
everything is perfect and it's all about me
but I been around a while, and i know better
gone are those days when i believed everything i see
they're gone...those days.
those days are gone....
You oughtta be a politician
with a face like that you could really blow up the scene
but you'd probably be better off if you didn't bother with it
it's a pretty rough game and it's bound to mean
so long i waited
don't prove me wrong
and i waited
and i"ll keep waiting just as long as i'm breathing
i waited
i keep waiting baby right here down on my knees
when i was a child I filled my days with fiction
my imagination never let me down
with my head buried in a book or on the living room floor listening
to the records i found that shaped the way i see things now
like sam stone, peter pan and jesus
and when I got a little older I found that I could sing and play
So I never really finished school
I thought I'd make it up in music
Now this is all that i can do
there really isn't any more to say
So long i waited
now those days are gone
and i waited
and i"ll keep waiting just as long as i'm breathing
i waited
i keep waiting baby right here down on my knees
cuz you know just how to make me feel like
everything is perfect and it's all about me
but I been around a while, and i know better
gone are those days when i believed everything i see

Again In The Light
05:21
|
|||
I've spent time in lots of places
i been looking to find myself
i get all my money at the races
i keep letting it ride
i been called a man of many faces
some even call me a liar but i said
my head gets to spinning and a racing
i start acting the child
but if i cry
lay me down slow and lift me up easy
give me some time to get on my feet again
and find myself again in the light
i guess i've been acting crazy
i jump into the fire head first
my friends they all think i'm lazy
but i been walking the wire
loveless, cynical and maybe
i get tired of trying but this time
i swear i will take it easy
i don't think it's my time
but if i die
lay me down slow and lift me up easy
give me some time to get on my feet again
and find myself again in the light
well i've been on this road before
i've knocked on every door
when i think i've found one open
it's locked tight
i get lonely more and more
i ain't rich but i ain't poor
i just need some place that's warm
to spend the night
and if i cry
lay me down slow and lift me up easy
give me some time to get on my feet again
and find myself again in the light
i've spent time in lots of places
i been looking to find myself
i get all my money at the races
i keep letting it ride....letting it ride...letting it ride

Dark Eyes
04:02
|
|||
run....
while you still can
she got that wood faerie dark magic
make you forget where you been
and when she comes
it'll take your wind
it'll take a piece of your life span
but still you don't want it to end
it ain't cuz she's young
that she can't be your friend
it ain't the sweetness about her
that keeps you from drinking her all in
it's those dark eyes
and it's that crooked smile
it's those dark eyes
those dark eyes that keep you out
long past closing time
she like your tongue
and your influence
she likes the way you choose your words
not just for meaning but for rhythm and cadence
she don't play dumb
but she likes to be led
she likes to whisper secrets
and leave you to wonder what she said
yeah, she's fun
but she got no regrets
she'll fill your head up with images
you'll wish you could forget
but those dark eyes
and that crooked smile
those dark eyes
those dark eyes remind you that
something just ain't right
don't be confused
a man could get used to this kind of treatment
better hold on tight
dark eyes will keep you up with bad dreams all night
so run....
while you still can
she got that wood faerie dark magic
make you forget where you been

Put This Down
05:53
|
|||
when i was a young man i would
get out of my head when i could
but that didn't do me no good
i'm a needle in a haystack
locked in my room
stinking of beer and perfume
sucking down gospel and blues
i'm a pony at the feed bag
baby i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put it down
i don't need to tell you can see
that all of these riffs that i bring
flow out me like it ain't no thing
i'm a weasle in a hen house
look and you'll see
both mothers and daughters agree
that if ever there way such a thing
i'm a keeper and a throw back
baby i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put it down
and when the earth shakes
you'll know i'm coming
when i hit this on the first take
i know you'll come running
even though it ain't your birthday
the gifts keep coming
cuz baby even on my worst day
i'm giving you something....
baby i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put it down
if i was a one woman man
girl i would never leave your side
if i was a one woman man
girl i would never leave your side
cuz i know a red headed woman
she won't never leave me dry
whether early in the morning
afternoon or late at night
whether early in the morning
afternoon or late at night
she give me everything i want
she always treat me right
baby if i didn't know better
i would swear you came to fight
baby if i didn't know better
i would swear you came to fight
girl you beat me up so bad
though i resist with all my might
baby i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put this down
i'm gonna put it down
when i was a young man i would
get out of my head when i could
but that didn't do me no good
i'm a needle in a haystack

Before I Go
03:46
|
|||
I'd been sleeping for some hours
Just woke up and you were there
Like the morning, like the flowers
Sunlight whispering in my ear
Red tail hawk shooting down the canyon
Put me on that wind he rides
I will be your true companion
When we reach the other side
I will try and I will stumble
But I will fly, he told me so
Proud and high or low and humble
Many miles before I go
Can't decide which way to travel
On the ground or in the sky
All my schemes have come unraveled
All that's left is you and I
And I will try and I will stumble
but I will fly, he told me so
Proud and high or low and humble
Many miles before I go
there's ghosts on the trees
there's ghosts on the wires
Asking questions and showing signs
Shivering with truth they are lighting fires
Lighting fires all down the line
And I will try, and I will stumble
But I will fly, he told me so
Proud and high or low and humble
Many miles before I go
