    I wrote this song a week after my birthday in 2003. It was March 20th and Operation Iraqi Freedom was being launched right in front of my eyes on every cable news network. I typically don't write in front of a television, and i wasn't planning on it this time either but as i fiddled around with a riff i'd been working on this song poured out (along with a few tears I'm not embarrassed to admit) of me.
    I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent person. Certainly smart enough to know that my opinions don't mean much in the larger world. But as this song wrote itself in 6 or 7 minutes I realized that I didn't actually know what i thought about this invasion. I did know that the whole world seemed to be on fire. People all over the world were in the streets. Just as many were certain that this was the right choice. The only choice. I was somewhere in the middle of those positions, and both sides saw me clearly in the "other" camp. The human grief that I knew would result weighed more heavily than the question of who was right and who was wrong. Dialogue becomes almost impossible in moments of extreme feeling.
